I believe that avoiding refined foods is the first step to help lose weight. They could taste great, but prepared foods include very little nutritional value, making you try to eat more only to have enough energy to get over the day. In case you are constantly consuming these foods, transitioning to whole grains and other complex carbohydrates will help you to have more vigor while eating less.
